Delaware Woman Gives Birth After Domestic Assault, Later Dies of Injuries

BEAR, Del. (CBS) -- Police say a woman from New Castle County, Delaware who was assaulted while she was pregnant has died of her injuries.

Authorities say 21-year-old Paola Delgado-Polanco was pronounced dead Wednesday morning. She had given birth to a baby girl. The newborn was listed in critical but stable condition at Christiana Hospital.

Police say they responded to a home in the Waterford Trailer Park along the 800 block of Samantha Circle in Bear on October 19 after county paramedics reported they had found the woman unconscious inside the home.

Investigators determined the woman's injuries were sustained during a domestic dispute with 24-year-old Fernando Flores.

Flores was arrested that same day and charged with assault. The charges have now been upgraded to manslaughter.

Flores remains committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution.
