Deadly Accidents Claim Four Lives In Four Hours

By Pat Loeb

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --- A series of car and pedestrian accidents claimed four lives in four hours this morning in Philadelphia.

The string of accidents began around 2:15am, when a driver that police say was under the influence drove into a pole on Stenton Avenue, near Logan street. His passenger was killed. He is being held by police.

A short time later in the Cobbs Creek section, a 69-year-old man died after plowing into a row of five parked cars in the 5000 block of Haverford Avenue.

About an hour later, police were called to Broad and Venango Street, where a woman had been struck by two cars. Only one driver stopped. The other is being sought. The victim is reported in extremely critical condition.

Then, about 6:30 a.m., a man and a woman were killed when they were hit by a car as they crossed Roosevelt Boulevard, at the intersection with Hartel Avenue.

All of the accidents are under investigation.
