Jay Lloyd's Getaway: Wintertime Work-and-Play Ski Adventures

By Jay Lloyd

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. (CBS) -- While most getaway seekers are still thinking about fall foliage, some people are already talking about free skiing and snowboarding.

But for them, there's a job attached to it.

Not a single flake has fallen, and brilliant-colored leaves are still clinging to life.  But ski resort operators can't wait till the snow flies to hire the staff they need for a brisk season on the slopes.

Between here and the Poconos, there are literally thousands of job openings.

"Lift operators, customer service, rental equipment, ski instructors," lists Rick Buckman (top photo), operator of  Spring Mountain ski area, in nearby Spring Mount, Pa.

He and others are hiring right now.

A little further away in the Poconos, Jim Tust at Shawnee Mountain is putting on a staff of 500 for the winter -- and they do get perks.

"When you get hired here, we do offer complimentary skiing," he notes.  And if you work full-time, there's free skiing for your spouse and kids, too.

Check your favorite area web site for job opportunities, job fair dates, and online applications. There are jobs for students as young as 14.  Many positions are part-time and on weekends.

Retirees with some time to spend and a passion for skiing have a good shot at a really fun-filled job!
