Allowances, Kids Love It And Parents Often Forget To Hand It Out—Now There's An App For That!

By Robin Culverwell

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Multi-tasking parents who might struggle to remember to give their children their allowance can rejoice! There's an app to help!

Allowance Manager lets parents track how much money kids should have by virtually putting money in kids' accounts.

Creator Dan Meader says parents can set the amount and frequency of payment and the kids' version of the app lets them see how much they have.

Meader says the idea was born of a family disagreement over who had how much allowance.

"I was in a store my kids came up to me and said will you please buy us a video game. I said 'no' and they said 'may we buy it with our allowance?' I said well yes, but I had to ask 'how much allowance do you have?'

After much discussion Meader's children suggested he write the app, which comes in a free version, though there's also a paid version where you're moving real cash and not monopoly money.

He says the lesson here is that children learn the value of saving and spending, and mom and dad get a helping hand on the follow through.
