Pat Gillick Expects At Least Two Years Before Phillies Contend
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Pat Gillick, who is currently a senior advisor for the Phillies and the acting CEO, said on Thursday that he does not expect the team to contend in the very near future. The team's play on the field in recent seasons would lead one to that conclusion, but to hear a member of the organization state it outright is something that really puts it all into perspective.
Gillick made the comments to CSNPhilly. During the interview Gillick stated "I think we're more toward rebuilding than reloading." That was a sentiment that was not echoed during the season by either Dave Montgomery or Ruben Amaro Jr.
"Where we are right now, it's probably a couple years [before the team contends]. I wouldn't think '15 or '16. I think somewhere around 2017 or 2018."
Gillick went on to add that everyone on the Phillies' roster is "in play right now."
"We're listening on all the players on our roster. If it makes sense to us and it makes us better and gets us going in the direction we want, we'll make that deal."
These statements appear to be some of the first definitive rebuilding statements made from a member of the Phillies.
