All Lanes of Renovated Section of NE Extension Reopened To Traffic

By Kim Glovas

LANSDALE, Pa. (CBS) -- Part of the Northeast Extension of the Pennysylvania Turnpike is reopening fully this afternoon after being under construction for years.

Construction to widen the Northeast Extension, from Lansdale south, began in 2011.

"Our customers traveling on the Northeast Extension between the Mid-County interchange and Lansdale will be pleased to know that we are opening three lanes in each direction," says Mimi Doyle, with the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission.  She says all lanes will be open in time for the evening rush hour.

The project's cost was $191 million.

Doyle says the first thing drivers will notice is a smoother surface, sound barriers, and wide shoulders.  But she cautions drivers using the new section that just north of it, a widening project is continuing.
