Why Black Sunday Really Did Have An Impact

By Ray Boyd

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Since it's a bye week we have the freedom to harp on last week's Eagles game just a little bit longer than usual. One of the major aspects of the evening was clearly the implementation of Black Sunday. The debate has carried on all week as to whether or not the Black Out actually had something to do with the 27-0 win over the Giants.

Did it tangibly impact the way the players performed against the Giants? Of course it didn't.

However, it created an environment that made the game itself feel like something more than your run of the mill regular season game.

The Eagles organization could not have picked a better game to have that type of event. Playing a hated rival, unifying the fan base and team by rallying around a color and having a halftime performance created a playoff atmosphere in the middle of the regular season.

Purists out there will argue that you shouldn't themed nights to get the crowd going for such a big game, but you cannot argue with the impact. Why not crank up the intensity that much more in a stadium where it would have already been tough for the Giants to walk into without pressure.

I do not fall on the side that wants to see the all black uniforms rolled out all the time. That would dilute the meaning of it. However, I for one enjoyed the atmosphere it created, and anything to make it more of a party when a divisional opponent is in town, should be welcomed.
