Former Eagle Fryar, Mother Face Trial On Mortgage Fraud Charges

BURLINGTON COUNTY, N.J. (CBS) - Former Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Irving Fryar and his mother will be tried on mortgage fraud charges in Burlington County.
The pair were offered deals to avoid trial -- five years prison for Fryar, three years for his mom, Allene McGhee -- along with repaying some $700,000 allegedly obtained through five home equity loans.
"We made what we thought was a fair and reasonable plea offer to Mr. Fryar and his mother," says Elie Honig, who heads up the New Jersey Division of Criminal Justice which is handling the case.
Their answer...no thanks.
"They have the right to go to trial and have their guilt proven beyond a reasonable doubt and that will be the next step here," Honig says.
That trial is set for February 3rd before Burlington County Judge Jeanne Covert. They could face five to ten years if convicted.
McGhee is 73 and lives in Willingboro. Her 52-year-old son serves as a minister at a church in Mount Holly. Attorneys for both defendants failed to respond to KYW Newsradio's calls seeking comment.
