Unsung Hero: Nan Ballay

Nan Ballay

  • Started the Cole T. Ballay "Carpe Diem" foundation to honor her son who passed away when he was in his junior year at Germantown Academy
  • He was an extremely passionate and talented soccer player
  • We wish to pay tribute to him by helping other young kids to "seize the day" as he did

Two-part mission of the foundation: 

  1. KANG (Kids Aspiring to New Goals) Scholarships
  • Provide scholarship opportunities for passionate youth to attain their aspirations
  • 11-14 year old nominees are eligible for awards up to $500
  • The foundation has given scholarships to kids with varying interests to pursue their passions: soccer, wresting, science, writing, photography, music, swimming, ect….
  1. Teen Brain Education/Research
  • Encourage and support efforts in ongoing research and education in the understanding "what makes the teen brain tick?"
  • Hold community events to educate parents, mentors, teachers, and teens on issues surrounding adolescents today

 

Free Community Event

  • Speaker: Dr. Matt Bellace
    • Clinical psychologist and comedian who uses humor to convey his message
  • His presentation: "Supporting Teens in Making Healthy Choices"
  • Thursday, October 23, 2014
  • 7:00pm - 8:30pm
  • At GermantownAcademy
