Police: 2 Suspects Sought In Rittenhouse Square Bike Theft

By Walt Hunter

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Philadelphia Police say they are looking for a pair of bike thieves who stole two bikes Saturday and again on Sunday from an underground garage storage area of a building in the 200 block of South 18th Street on Rittenhouse Square.

Captain Frank Banford, commander of Central Detective Division, told CBS 3's Walt Hunter, like many bike thieves the pair worked quickly and quietly, and could have been mistaken for someone simply unlocking their bike.

Police records indicate so far this year more than 400 bikes have been stolen in the two police districts covering Center City.

Richie Cortez, owner of the Philadelphia Bikesmith Shop at 19th and Spring Garden Streets says his store carries a number of locks for bikes, but the most important protection is not leaving them outside overnight.

Police say a new bike registry system is about to go online which would allow bike owners to register their bicycles, along with pictures and identification numbers, on a master database.

Investigators want anyone with information on the two Rittenhouse Square thieves to notify them immediately.

They add with more residents than ever using bikes, protection from thieves is more important than ever.
