Fall Is Not Without Fleas

By Nan Talleno

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Just when you think those pesky fleas are done pestering until next spring, think again. Fleas not only flourish in spring and summer but, depending upon where you live in the country, flea season can even extend until late fall.

The flea season is greatly influenced by temperature and humidity levels. In the Philadelphia/Tri-State area, fleas can live until late October or even into November and possibly into early December! It all depends on what the temperature is.

Fleas can thrive until the temperature drops to 35 degrees Fahrenheit or below. At that point, the weather must remain cold up to two weeks.

There are things you can do to keep fleas away. Keep outdoor areas clean and clear. Keep your dog away from bushes and overgrown grassy and gravelly areas. Steer clear of walking him under overhanging tree branches and avoid shaded areas where fleas can breed.

Make sure to wash your dog's bedding frequently. Vacuum regularly and make sure to change the bag and dispose of it right away, as fleas can continue to live and breed there.

Protect both your dogs and cats by checking in with your vet.

Enjoy the changing season and keep your pets happy and healthy.
