Philadelphia Teams, 94WIP React To The Passing Of Bill Campbell

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Philadelphia definitely has its share of sports broadcasting legends, but few touched the city's sports landscape quite like Bill Campbell did. Campbell passed away on Monday at the age of 91.

During his storied career, Campbell called games for the Philadelphia Warriors, the Philadelphia 76ers, the Philadelphia Eagles and the Philadelphia Phillies.

Campbell called Wilt Chamberlain's NBA record 100 point performance as well as the Eagles' 1960 Championship. On Monday after the news, a few of those franchises shared their thoughts on the passing of the man who voiced some of their best moments.

Members of the Eagles organization also released the following statements:

"Bill Campbell is truly a legend as his knowledge and passion for sports in this city filled the airwaves for decades. Being the voice of the Phillies, 76ers, and Eagles throughout his career, it was clear that Philadelphia sports were in his blood. His call of the 1960 NFL Championship and of Wilt Chamberlain's historic 100-point game will never be forgotten. On behalf of the Philadelphia Eagles and our legion of fans, we send our condolences to the Campbell family on their loss." Eagles President Don Smolenski

"He was the greatest in the history of Philadelphia broadcasting. He did every sport in Philadelphia – the Warriors and the Sixers in basketball, the Phillies, the Eagles of course, college basketball, the Penn Relays, hosted talk shows – and he was great. The Dean. He was also the single greatest interviewer I ever heard.

"He was an inspiration to me as I listened to him broadcast Eagles games. He painted a wonderful picture with a direct, accurate style. He described the action in a beautiful, articulate style. He was the standard for play-by-play broadcasters, even in today's market.

"There is no question that he helped ignite my passion for the Eagles and helped create a path for my road to what I've loved doing for so many years." - Eagles Play-By-Play Voice and 94WIP's Merrill Reese

94WIP Hosts remembered Campbell, as well:

"He was eloquent and amazing from day one to the end. He is the most versatile broadcaster in the history of this town and I would argue, the best, because he could do absolutely everything at the highest possible level. He made such a massive imprint on each and every one of our lives." - Angelo Cataldi

"Legend is not even a good enough word. I don't know what word to use beyond that. He was what we don't have enough of in today's world."Howard Eskin
