Man Shot By Off-Duty Police Officer In Burlington County

EDGEWATER PARK, N.J. (CBS) --- The Burlington County Prosecutor and Edgewater Park Police are investigating an early morning shooting involving an off-duty police officer.

According to police, a man was shot in the back by an off-duty Delanco police officer early Monday morning at Stevenson Ave and Cherix Ave in Edgewater Park, Burlington County.

An investigation revealed at the end of Officer Basil Warren's shift at 3 a.m. he traveled traveled to a property that he had recently purchased in the 200 block of Stevenson Avenue in Edgewater Park. Officer Warren was driving his personal vehicle, but he was still in uniform.

Upon exiting his residence he came upon an adult male who was in the driver's seat of his vehicle. The male has been identified as Tysean Fitzpatrick, 26, of Willingboro.

During a confrontation, it is believed Officer Warren ordered Fitzpatrick to get out of his vehicle.

It is unclear what exactly happened next, but Officer Warren discharged his department-issued .40 caliber firearm multiple times, striking
Fitzpatrick.

An investigation determined the suspect was able to maneuver the vehicle down the street a bit before it came to a stop.

Police were called by a nearby resident, and upon arrival authorities found Officer Warren administering first aid the suspect.

The wounded man was flown to Cooper Medical Center in Camden where he underwent emergency surgery. He is listed in critical condition, police say.

No police officers were hurt in the incident.

Police say Officer Warren has been a law enforcement officer for 10 years.

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
