Confession Scrutinized In Trial Of Man Charged With Murdering Infant And Her Grandmother

NORRISTOWN, Pa. (CBS) -- Testimony in the trial for an Upper Merion man charged with murdering a 10-month-old infant and her grandmother in what prosecutors say was a botched kidnapping attempt in King of Prussia nearly two years ago is focusing on the confession he made to police.
Police say a key clue was a ransom note found in the apartment that made reference to the baby's parents by names that only a few close friends and relatives would know.
The lead detective testified that further investigation led them to Raghu Yandamuri, who they found at the blackjack table at the Valley Forge Casino just days after the murders.
He was questioned for several hours and on tape demonstrated for police how he killed the woman.
Attorney Steve Heckman is advising Yandamuri, who is representing himself.
"It's not a pretty picture. It's going to be something he's going to have to explain to the satisfaction of the jury and I think he thinks he'll be able to do that," Heckman explained.
In his opening statement last week, Yandamuri told the jury the statement was coerced.
But prosecutor Kevin Steele says the surveillance from the casino shows him leaving willingly with police, who say he was very cooperative.
