Local Non-Profit Kicks Off Breast Cancer Awareness Month With Week Of Activities

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A Montgomery County non-profit will kick off Breast Cancer Awareness month on Sunday with a week of activities designed to promote breast health among African American women.
Praise is the Cure was founded nine years ago by breast cancer survivor Anita Conner and her daughter Terri.
"African American women are dying at a great rate than any other ethnic group and we really wanted to do something about it."
So they started a non-profit with the goal of educating, motivating and encouraging Black women to get breast screenings and mammograms,then six years ago, Terri says the duo got the shock of a lifetime.
"When she was celebrating ten years of being cancer free, I was diagnosed with an advanced stage of cancer."
After two years of treatment, Terri is now a six year survivor and focuses more on the mission at Praise is the Cure, which kicks off a week of education-focused events tomorrow.
"We'll be in 50 plus churches handing out breast health literature and just honoring our survivors."
