NEWARK, Del. (CBS) – Newark Police say an eight-year-old girl is in critical condition after she was attacked by a Pit Bull Saturday afternoon.

This happened around 1 p.m. on the unit block of Adelene Drive in the City of Newark.

Police say the girl was attacked at her home, where the dog also resides.

According to police, the victim’s 15-year-old sister helped fight off the dog and was able to call 9-1-1.

When police arrived, they had to shoot and kill the Pit Bull because the dog continued to act aggressively while they were trying to help the eight-year-old girl.

The victim was rushed to the hospital and eventually airlifted to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia for specialty care of severe soft tissue injuries.
