PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Dwayne Savage is in his third year as head coach at Camden High School and in that short period of time he's made the Panthers viable contenders for the NJSIAA South Jersey Group 2 championship.

Savage inherited a 2-8 team and in two years transformed the program into a 10-1 winner, which reached the South Jersey Group 2 semifinals last year, before losing to eventual Group 2 champion Haddonfield.

What Savage has also done is keep local talent at home. Savage has six players that have received Division I offers (5-11, 160-pound Sr. DB/WR Jamir Washington; 6-2, 190-pound Jr. WR/DB Brad Hawkins; 6-4, 220-pound Jr. DE Jamal Holloway; 6-4, 240-pound Jr. TE-DE Ron Johnson Jr.; 6-2, 210-pound Jr. TE/LB Dymelle Parker; and 6-1, 210-pound Jr. LB-RB Demian Thomas).

Directing this talented crew and surging toward an all-time South Jersey passing record is 5-9, 160-pound senior quarterback Khalil Williams, who's thrown 63 career TDs as a four-year starter. Williams has a chance to eclipse the South Jersey's all-time career touchdown leader, Pennsville's Dylan Cummings, who holds the record at 84 reached last year.

"I want to be honest, I like last year's team better than this year's team, because we're a little inexperienced on the offensive line right now, but there is a lot to like about this team," Savage said. "As the season goes on, the o-line we're hoping picks up. I think we have the potential to be better than last year's team. We can go as far as last year's did—and possibly even deeper."

But Savage noted South Jersey Group 2 is loaded field, beginning with defending champ Haddonfield, then there's Glassboro, Cedar Creek, West Deptford and Barnegat.

Game of the Week

McDonogh School (Md.) (3-1) at La Salle (3-1) at Plymouth Whitemarsh High School, Saturday, 7 PM

This is another great test for the Explorers, who are coming off a 28-7 victory last weekend over Malvern Prep, behind quarterback Kyle Shurmur's 20-29 passing, which featured three TDs and 245 yards. McDonogh is considered right now the best team in Maryland. The Eagles traveled to Ohio and beat Elder (Cincinnati), 28-14, scoring 28 unanswered points after trailing 14-0. The Eagles have a nice pass-catch duo in junior quarterback Jansen Durham and senior wide receiver Michael Cornwell, who stung Elder for a 51-yard TD hookup.
