Bucks County Firm Admits Restaurant Checkout Systems Were Compromised

By KYW tech editor Ian Bush

NEWTOWN, Pa. (CBS) - The latest mass data breach affected more than 200 Jimmy John's sandwich stores -- including one in Newark, Delaware.

But a Bucks County firm that provides checkout equipment for Jimmy John's and other restaurants now admits its systems were compromised.

UPDATE: MORE THAN TWO DOZEN LOCAL RESTAURANTS HACKED (see latest story)

Of the 108 restaurants that Signature Systems of Newtown says were hit by the digital data thieves, there are at least eight in our area (see below) .

Signature says someone "gained access to a user name and password" to its point-of-sale systems.

That allowed the criminal to install software at those restaurants -- grabbing the name, account number, and more from swiped cards.  The malicious program was designed to doge anti-virus.

Those breaches began in mid-June.  Signature says it learned of the problem at the end of July, but wasn't able to secure every system until a week ago.

The company says on its website that it's unclear how many cards were used in the affected stores during the attack.

Signature didn't return KYW Newsradio's call for further details on the local restaurants compromised; its web site doesn't even list the states -- or, in some cases, cities -- where the affected stores are located.

Below is a list of the stores in our area.
