AC Mayor On Forming Regional Police Force Similar To Camden: Not A Good Idea Right Now

By David Madden

ATLANTIC CITY, NJ (CBS) -- Last week, we told you about one idea being considered to cut costs in Atlantic City by forming a regional police force similar to that now in place in Camden. The mayor of Atlantic City does not think that's a good idea right now.

Comparing Camden and Atlantic City, at least on the police issue, just won't work for Atlantic City Mayor Don Guardian. Looking at Camden, "At the time, they had a local PBA that was not willing to consider the serious cuts in costs that were involved. We don't have that case in Atlantic City."

He's confident he'll get the concessions he needs not just from police, but all parts of city government, to help bridge an anticipated $65 million deficit next year.

Guardian believes those concessions will be a linchpin for outright state aid he needs to avoid a third straight year of real estate tax increases.
