NJ's Big-City Mayors To Seek Joint Crime Solutions
NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — The mayors of New Jersey's three largest cities are meeting in Newark to tackle crime and other problems by working together.
Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop and Paterson Mayor Jose Torres announced in July that they would seek intra-city cooperation to confront issues such as violent crime, prisoner re-entry, the foreclosure crisis and spending on recreation. Their goal is to identify areas in which a joint approach could produce better results.
Newark has suffered a spate of murders over the last month, and Paterson was rocked when a 12-year-old girl died after being shot while riding her scooter. A police officer was fatally shot in Jersey City in July by a man who apparently provoked the confrontation.
Wednesday's conference is to be held at Rutgers-Newark.
