Philadelphia Practice Manager's Coursework Prepared Her For Evolving Standards

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, life expectancy is longer today than ever, due to active lifestyles; so the demand for medical services in the health care industry is growing. Rashida Hardwick, practice manager for Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) in the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, chose a career in health care that will offer her job security for years to come because of the demand for good health care providers.

What is your education?

"I have a bachelor's degree in health services management. I graduated Cum Laude from Philadelphia University in 2011. They have a continuing education program for professional students, which I am involved in at the present time at Saint Joseph's University and anticipate graduating in May of 2015."

Can you describe your duties as a health care administrator?

"I ensure adequate Nurse Anesthetist staffing for Penn Medicine, which includes 35 operating rooms at four facilities covering six service areas. I oversee the utilization of appropriate resources to ensure fiscal responsibility, the accuracy of payroll and staff allocation, and the functionality of clinical operations. I also advocate for the clinicians within the practice, as well as safeguard patient safety and quality of care through verification of licensure and certifications."

How has your education prepared you for your career as a nurse and in health care administration?

"The coursework for the Master of Science in health care administration degree program examines trends in the field, current research and assessments for health care professionals. The standards for delivery of health care are evolving tremendously. My education in the field is applicable to my current role and the future of health care."

What continuing education is required for your role?

"Continuing education is not mandatory. However, it is essential for professional development."
