Traveling By Car With Your Dog

By Nan Talleno

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Here are a few tips when traveling by car with your dog.

Before venturing out, first make sure that he/she is considered to be in overall good health by your vet and is up to date with all vaccines.

It's extremely important that he has identification at all times such as a microchip or an ID on his collar.

Be sure to adequately walk your dog before you leave and make frequent stops as need be along the way. Do not feed your dog immediately before leaving to avoid carsickness. And, always bring along a supply of fresh water, the food bowl, a leash, some treats, food, a blanket and a favorite toy.

For safety, bring along the carrier or have him comfortably fitted in a car restraining harness that acts as a seat belt. Never let your dog roam freely in the car. It can be fatal in an accident even at a low level speed. It doesn't hurt to bring along first aid bandages too as well as a first aid kit. And never ever leave your pet unattended in the car in warm temperatures.

Do your research first to find plenty of pet-friendly hotels, motels and pet-friendly vacations and activities before you head out. There are various sites to check such as BringFido.com, PetHotelsofAmerica.com and PetsWelcome.com to name a few.

Buckle up, stay safe and have fun together as you hit the road with your best friend!
