3 On Your Side: Best Days To Find Coupons

By Jim Donovan

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Are you the type of shopper who's always looking for a coupon to maximize your savings? Well if you think that coupons are just released at random, 3 On Your Side Consumer Reporter Jim Donovan says, think again.

Whether you're shopping online, or in stores, having a strategy may help when searching for coupons. "We analyzed two years worth of coupons in our database to identify the best times to find coupons to save money and save time," says Mark LoCastro of DealNews.com.

In that analysis a pattern emerged. LoCastro says, "Retailers always release a bunch of coupons at the first of the month and these things typically last through out that entire month however these may not be the best offers that the store or retailers are offering. The shorter period of time that they release a coupon for usually translates to better savings."

While many retailers rotate offers on a weekly basis LoCastro says, "We've noticed that the start of the week, particularly on Sunday is the highest volume of when retailers release their coupons."

Over the past two years Deal News also found that October and August had the highest number of active coupons.  LoCastro says, "In August that's because a combination of back to school sales and also end of summer clearance offers."

Many retailers offer coupons and coupon codes exclusively to customers on their mailing lists.  While it eliminates searching around, I suggest if you do sign up, use a separate email account so you don't get swamped with junk email.
