Rutgers Tuition, Fee To Rise By About 2 Percent

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (AP) — Tuition and fees are going up at New Jersey's flagship university for the upcoming school year.

The Rutgers University Board of Governors voted Wednesday to raise tuition by about 2 percent for the 2014-2015 academic year.

Students and several state officials had appealed to the board to consider a tuition freeze on the heels of a 3.3 percent hike last year.

In-state students currently pay more than $13,000 in tuition and fees at Rutgers, and the price is more than $25,000 for those who live on campus.

The board voted to raise undergraduate tuition, fees and room and board by 1.93 percent at the New Brunswick campus, 1.98 in Camden and 1.48 percent in Newark.

The approved increases will raise tuition, fees and room and board to $25,561 for a New Jersey resident enrolled in Rutgers' arts and sciences program in New Brunswick, using the most popular dining plan and living in a traditional residence hall.

Comparable charges for a typical undergraduate in Camden will be $25,096 and in Newark, about $25,806.

The university also approved a 3 percent increase for the Rutgers Assistance Grant program, increasing the school's financial assistance coffers to $31.5 million.

School officials said the tuition and fee increases were necessary, in part, because the state appropriation for Rutgers is scheduled to remain unchanged for the coming year.

In a written statement, Board of Governors Chair Greg Brown said the board has worked to keep in-state tuition fee increases among the lowest for public institutions in New Jersey and nationwide, while continuing to provide millions of dollars in financial aid.
