3 On Your Side: Two 'Smartwatches' Hit The Market

By Jim Donovan

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- If you're always pulling out your phone to check your messages, perhaps you would be interested in a smartwatch.  As 3 On Your Side Consumer Reporter Jim Donovan finds, two new models are being introduced that can give you notifications and information right on your wrist.

Two new smart watches are hitting the market, the $199 Samsung Gear Live and $229 LG G Watch.

Both use Google's new android software and respond to voice commands, processing information within a few seconds. While similiar in design, the Gear Live also has a heart rate monitor.

CNET Editor Scott Stein says future apps will allow you to track your fitness or even monitor your home, but right now the watches are still in the early stages.  He says, "Until we know what the software is going to be like, which is going to take some time, with all those apps, and we want to see what these other watches look like, there's no reason to rush on this."

While these smartwatches connect with your phone and provide another screen to get your information and notifications, one drawback is that their battery life lasts only about a day.

By the way, more smartwatches are expected later this year including devices from Apple, Microsoft and Motorola.
