Search Continues For Missing Boater In Delaware River
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The search for a man missing after his boat capsized in the Delaware River resumed Thursday morning.
Search crews from Philadelphia, New Jersey State Police and the Coast Guard wasted no time in using boats, a chopper and underwater tracking devices to try and locate a 66-year-old man who police say has not been seen since 8 p.m. Wednesday.
CBS 3 is told he was one of five people on board a 24-foot sailboat. When the storm moved in, police say they dropped their sails and used a motor to head back to the Delaware River Yacht Club, to no avail.
"It filled with water, and according to the individuals that were on the boat, it sunk almost immediately. Four of the five were able to swim to safety," Chief Inspector Scott Small said.
Four of the five made it to the banks of the river, police say, behind the Philadelphia Fire Academy in Holmesburg. They called 911 and told authorities the last time they saw the 66-year-old, he was using a cooler to stay afloat.
"The only thing we found is that cooler that the 66-year-old male was last seen using as a floatation device," Small said.
As of now there is still no sign of the 66-year-old man, or the sailboat.
At this time, police say the do not suspect foul play or that alcohol played a factor.
