Record Heat A Possibility Today

By Geoff Bansen

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- You stay cool, Philadelphia.

*A Heat Advisory is in effect from noon until 7PM this evening*

Temperatures will approach record status on Wednesday, June 18th. The record of 96 set back in 1957 will be threatened today as highs soar into the mid-90s, with the head index nearing triple digits in many locations. Philadelphia already set a new record high low for this morning, 79 degrees. Factor in the humidity and it's going to feel borderline oppressive today. The sunshine will help to heat things up quickly. There is also the threat for some severe thunderstorms later this evening, so be sure to keep an eye to the sky if you have after work plans!

Thursday will feature much more cloud cover and temperatures that won't be as steamy. There will be scattered showers and thunderstorms throughout most of the day as a cold front dips to the south of us, clearing things out for Friday.

Beach forecast: Sunny and Warm, upper 80s to near 90. UV Index 9
Poolside Forecast: 5 beach balls, the best type of day to stay cool in the pool!

Today In Weather History:
1944 -- Hail did considerable damage to tomato crops in Burlington Co, NJ.
