Some Gastric Surgery Benefits May Outweigh Diet And Exercise Alone

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - If you have obesity and diabetes, diet and exercise are the best way to deal with it but we are also learning that in some cases surgery may be what it takes to turn the corner.

This past week results of a study were released which looked at the use of gastric surgical procedures to fight diabetes. In the study 38 patients with diabetes and obesity either received a gastric bypass or participated in a weight loss program, with 58% in the bypass group and 16% in the weight loss group obtaining blood sugar control at the end of one year.

An important point is that diet and exercise can work but there is evidence that these procedures can help.
