'Bring-Your-Own-Dog Brunch' Returns To Rittenhouse Square Restaurant

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – The dog days of summer are still a few weeks away, but one Center City restaurant has gotten a kick start.

Square 1682, located in the Hotel Palomar, began offering its Bring-Your-Own-Dog Brunch for the third year this past Saturday, June 7th.

The pooch-friendly brunch includes a $5 healthy meal for dogs and will be offered throughout the summer months at the restaurant's sidewalk seating area. There are five options for pet owners to choose from, such as the "Chase's Chow" with braised pork, grits, green beans, bacon gravy; or "Domino's Desayuno" with two egg omelet, ham, spinach, mushroom. The meals come with a bowl of water, and are named after Hotel Palomar or Square 1682 staffers' pets.

And humans won't go hungry either. There are plenty of tasty options on Square's regular brunch menu -- think french toast with berry rhubarb compote and a crab-laden eggs Benedict.

The BYOD brunch isn't just filling the bellies of pets and their owners; it's also helping Philadelphia shelter dogs. One dollar from each canine meal sold will go towards Operation Ava, a no-kill shelter headquartered in Northern Liberties.

Furthermore, representatives and volunteers from Operation Ava will be on-site with adoptable dogs every Saturday through August 22nd, just in case you're looking to add a new furry friend to the family. Organizers say the goal is to adopt out 18 dogs by the end of the summer.

If you're interested in the BYOD Brunch, it's being offered Saturday and Sundays throughout summer from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. For more information, visit: www.square1682.com or operationava.org.
