What Do You Want To See On South Street?

By Syma Chowdhry

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- South Street is going through a transformation. The many stores in the famous tourist spot can be selling something as simple as clothes, or more daring like tattoos, or items that can make you blush.

Some people describe South Street as "the place where hippies meet!" But many want to see it evolve and grow into something more.

The street is trying to add more businesses that can attract a diverse group of people, possibly something more family-friendly.

You may remember the McDonald's building that was located on South Street and 6th Street. It had been vacant for years until recently.

The building has been renovated to be a retail space on the first floor with apartments above it. The owners of the building, along with the South Street Headhouse District, wanted to know what Philadelphians want in that vacant retail spot, and throughout the street.

People were asked to write down what they wish was on South Street and stick the suggestion on the window.

"As part of the South Street Spring Festival, and thanks to the Philadelphia Magic Gardens and Art Gage, we were able to create a Neighborhland art installation in these storefront windows, which gave festival-goers a chance to tell us what shops, businesses and activities they would love to see come to South Street," said Michael Harris, executive director of the South Street Headhouse District.

The suggestions included a bowling alley, an arcade, batting cages and sculpture gallery.
