Policy Expert Bell Wins GOP US Senate Race In NJ

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — Former Washington policy analyst Jeff Bell has won a tight race for the GOP Senate primary nomination in New Jersey.

He narrowly defeated computer consultant Richard Puzzollo on Tuesday.

The other two Republicans running in the low-budget primary were concrete contractor Brian Goldberg and business professor Murray Sabrin.

Bell will face incumbent Democrat Cory Booker in the fall. Booker is considered a heavy favorite.

All but Goldberg had run for statewide office in the past but none has won a general election.

The last Republican elected to the U.S. Senate from New Jersey was Clifford Case, who served four terms before losing a primary in 1978. Bell was the candidate who defeated him.
