Ryne Sandberg On Eating Cat Food As A Child: "I Don't Know, I Guess I Was Hungry"

By Chris Stigall

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Chris Stigall talked to Phillies Manager Ryne Sandberg about a successful weekend against the Reds and eating cat food in his youth.

Sandberg said he's pleased with how the team has been hitting over the last couple games.

"The guys bounced back after a tough little stretch. Then the bats came alive with some very nice warm weather, which might've made a difference. We hit the ball out of the ball park, that was the other thing. We hit some homeruns. Hopefully those two things will continue. We do have some guys hitting for average but to now see the ball go out of the ball park, that's a bonus and that's needed."

He also addressed an admission he made during an in-game video montage where he said the strangest thing he's ever eaten was cat food.

"I did that as a youngster, maybe four or five-years-old, maybe six-years-old. I don't know. I guess I was hungry. I still remember the crunchiness of it was the biggest thing. This wasn't a one time thing either. This went on for about a year as a little snack," he confessed.

Sandberg expressed his faith in third baseman Cody Asche and explained his thought process for starting him the game after he made three errors in one inning against the Angels.

"Everyone now and then, that happens, the players have a rough game. The best thing is to get them right back out there because nobody wants to do well and change things other than that player. Cody bounced back real well, swinging the bat good and he definitely helped us get our offense going the last two games."
