LOWER MAKEFIELD TWP, Pa. (CBS) – State Police say a man is dead, and his friend is hospitalized after both were struck by cars in Bucks County early Sunday morning.

Authorities say 30-year old Benjamin Melendez was struck just after midnight as he tried to cross the Northbound lanes of I-95 in Lower Makefield, Bucks County. State Police say Melendez was trying to reach a friend, Maria Nyars, who came to help after the car he was in broke down near the Newtown-Yardley exit.

"He had called and said that his car was broken down then it happened so fast," Nyars tells CBS3 Eyewitness News.

26-year old Daniel Raymond of Levittown was driving the car that broke down. He was trying to drag Melendez out of the highway after he was struck by the first car, when both were struck by another vehicle.

"I didn't see him or his friend get out of the vehicle, I just heard a crash," Nyars says. "I thought they crashed into his car."

Raymond was taken to nearby St. Mary Medical Center in Langhorne. He was still there as of late Sunday night, listed in fair condition. Melendez was pronounced dead at the scene.

"He was a really amazing person, would do anything for you. was always there for you," Nyars said of her friend.

Police say the drivers of both cars involved in the accidents did stop and are cooperating with the investigation, which is ongoing.
