Weekend Box Office Report: Spider-Man Swings To The Top
By Bill Wine
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Spider-Man is spinning yet another box office web.
To no one's surprise, the fantasy sequel "The Amazing Spider-Man 2," starring Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone –- the weekend's only new mainstream release -- swung high above all other multiplex attractions on its debut weekend, kicking off the official summer movie season with a runaway first-place finish and an estimated take of a mere $92-million.
Last weekend's leader, "The Other Woman," was a distant runnerup with $14-million.
Third was the holdover "Heaven Is for Real," which took in $9-million.
And fourth with another $8-million was the smash, "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," as its cumulative total approaches the quarter-billion-dollar mark.
The Spider-Man sequel's $92-million opening represents the year's second highest total, just behind the Captain America sequel's $95-million opening last month.
