Philadelphia Woman Jailed For Allegedly Stealing Debit Card Belonging To Assisted Living Patient

By Brad Segall

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A Philadelphia woman is behind bars in Bucks County on $100,000 bail, charged with stealing a debit card belonging to a patient at an assisted living facility and running up quite a bill.

In just three months police say Jacqueline Tobutis made more than $30,000 in unauthorized purchases at businesses in Philadelphia, New Jersey, Bensalem and online.

Police say the 48-year-old woman took the man's card shortly after he arrived at the facility in October. Bensalem Public Safety Director Fred Harran says she was assigned as an aide to the man during his week-long stay.

"Unfortunately, these types of things of happen. A lot of these homes do the best they can to hire honest people but sometimes when a situation presents itself and someone wants to take advantage of another individual, they grab it."

The victim's power of attorney eventually caught the card's activity. Police say it was used more than 600 times.

Harran says the investigation is continuing but he refused to answer questions about whether there may be more victims out there.
