Woman Shot Twice By Masked Intruder While Lying In Bed

By Jenn Bernstein

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- South Detectives are searching for a man they say broke into a Point Breeze home and shot a woman while she was lying in her bed.

It happened on the 2200 block of Sears Street around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday.

The 24-year-old victim told detectives she was lying in her bed sleeping, when she was startled by an intruder.

"She's in the second floor front bedroom asleep when she wakes up to find a male wearing all dark clothing and a dark-colored mask covering his face standing over her," said Chief Inspector Scott Small. "The male shoots her two times for no apparent reason, we know of, then flees the scene on foot."

Police say the two bullets hit her in the back.

She was rushed to the Hospital of University of Pennsylvania where last heard, she was listed in stable condition.

What's not known is the motive for the shooting.

The victim told police the man didn't say anything to her before he fired his gun and so far detectives don't know if anything was taken from the home.

Authorities did find signs of forced entry.

"It appears the front door was forced open, there's damage to the door jam," said Chief Inspector Small.

Police say the man was last seen running West on Sears Street.

Detectives are checking area surveillance cameras for clues.
