SCHWENKSVILLE, Pa. The Schwenksville camp is facing its largest funding deficit since opening its doors more than sixty years ago, and that has organizers scrambling to find funding to allow nearly 500 kids to take advantage of the camp’s programs.
Camp director Alex Fizz says their mission is to provide students with an opportunity to attend a summer camp who otherwise wouldn’t be able to go — “whether it’s that their families couldn’t afford it, or whether it’s just that a student lacks some of the social skills needed to go to a traditional camp setting.”READ MORE: Gasoline Shortage Appears To Be Creeping Into Philadelphia Region As Colonial Pipeline Resumes Operations
Camp Rainbow operates for six weeks each summer, for children between the ages of seven and 16. Previously the camp had operated for eight weeks.
Fizz remains optimistic they’ll raise the money needed to open the doors this summer. Operating costs for a summer, he notes, are about $180,000, which doesn’t include any capital improvements.
