Sleds Becoming Hot Commodity This Cold, Snowy Winter

By Michelle Durham

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - With all this recent snow, it is inevitable that items associated with the winter weather would be in short supply.

Sleds are no exception.

Stu Stern at S & H Hardware in Northeast Philadelphia says the sales of sleds have risen exponentially:

"Great winter! Kids are out of school, they want to have fun."

He says they're selling about 20 a day, "which is about 400% more than I have been doing in the past four years."

As far as the cost of these sleds...

"Remember the flexible flyer wood sleds? They are running about $50 or $60. They go up to five feet in length and they are about $100," Stern explains. "My biggest sellers are skeleton foam boards. These kids kind of act as though they are skateboarding down the hill."

But Stern is concerned about safety, and he warns parents he has heard of children using ski wax to increase sled speed, which could result in a swift trip to the Emergency Room.
