Weekend Box Office Report: Frozen Keeps The Competition On Ice
By Bill Wine
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- On a frozen weekend, appropriately enough, Frozen found its way to the top.
After several weeks in a row as the box office runner-up, the animated musical, Frozen, finished first by earning an estimated $21-million.
The sequel, Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones, the fifth installment in the horror franchise and the weekend's only new mainstream release, finished second with $18-million.
Dropping to third place was recent box office leader The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, which had ruled the roost for three straight weekends.
It took in $16-million.
Rounding out the top five were holdovers The Wolf of Wall Street and American Hustle, each of which earned just above $13-million.
Overall, industry-wide totals were solid, even if a tad below those of a year ago.
