Father Arrested After 2-Year-Old Son Shot In Camden

CAMDEN, N.J. (CBS)–Camden County Police arrested a father who allegedly shot his 2-year-old son on New Year's Eve night.

At 10:52 p.m. officers were called to Cooper University Hospital where the 2-year-old was receiving treatment for a gunshot wound to the left arm and leg.

According to police, the father, Sergio Rivera, said he accidentally shot his son while inside of a vehicle on the corner of 21st and Pierce Streets.

The boy's mother and grandmother were also in the car at the time of the shooting.

Rivera drove to the hospital following the shooting and was uncooperative with investigators.

Police recovered the gun from the vehicle and also found Rivera in possession of several Percocet pills.

Rivera was remanded to the county jail with bail set at $185,000.

"Our prayers are with this child as he recovers," said Chief J. Scott Thomson. "Regardless of whether the shooting was intentional or accidental, it's the culture of violence and the illegal possessing of firearms that lies at the heart of our greatest challenge in reducing gun crime."
