PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - How many hours do you sleep every night?

The average American gets 6.9 hours of sleep each night. Experts in the field of sleep recommend seven to nine.

The problem of sleep deprivation has long-term effects including increased risk of problems like high blood pressure. A recent study also found a link to diabetes.

In addition to those who choose to limit their sleep because of work or other responsibilities, there are millions who have sleep-related issues like they have excessive daytime sleepiness, problems getting to sleep or excessive leg movements during sleep.

Obstructive sleep apnea which is associated with interruptions of the sleep cycle and poor oxygen distribution can be treated and tested for quite effectively with information gained from sleep studies.
