Many Puppies Still Available To Adopt This Holiday Season

By John McDevitt

MEDIA, Pa. (CBS) - Looking for a puppy for the holidays? How about checking the shelters.

"We don't want them to shop, we want them to adopt," Justina Calgiano, Director of community relations for the Delaware County SPCA, tells KYW Newsradio.

She says they really want people to consider adoption before anything else:

"A lot of people, unfortunately, don't know that there are puppies available -- up for adoption in animal shelters.  And we want to break that myth and say 'hey, we have puppies and we have a lot of them and we have the breed and color that you want, so come and see us before you go to the pet store, before you go to the breeder, because you are truly saving a life'."

And she says there are adult dogs, cats and kittens looking for good homes too.

If you're not ready to make a commitment and adopt, you can still donate.  There's a wish list of items needed on the organizations website to help care for the animals in the shelter.
