Major Retailer Remains Closed On Thanksgiving, Rips Those That Open

By Mike DeNardo

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A major retailer is remaining closed on Thanksgiving -- and blasting those that are open.

For the 18th consecutive year, electronics retailer P.C. Richard & Son has taken out ads ripping those businesses that open on Thanksgiving. The newspaper ad says "retailers who choose to open on Thanksgiving Day or Night show no respect to their employees."

Company president Gregg Richard says he's giving his 3,000 workers the holiday off to be home with their families.

"Thanksgiving is an all-American holiday, and not a shopping day," he says. "And it's sad and unfortunate that many retailers are turning it into a national shopping day."

Richard concedes he might be losing business to competitors who are open. But he says he's gotten thousands of letters, emails and Tweets telling him he's doing the right thing.

"We may lose some business on Thanksgiving Day," he says. "But for us, again, being a family-owned company for 104 years, there are some things that are more important than the almighty dollar."
