Lower Merion Police Hoping Public Can Help Crack String of Burglaries

LOWER MERION, Pa. (CBS) -- Authorities in Montgomery County, Pa. have called a community meeting for tomorrow evening to talk about a rash of home and commercial break-ins over the past ten months.
Since the beginning of the year, Lower Merion police say, there have been more than 200 burglaries or attempted burglaries at homes and commercial buildings throughout the township.
Now, they are bringing the community together to talk about crime prevention, the current statistics, and safety tips.
Lower Merion police superintendent Michael McGrath says the bandits strike mainly in the daytime or early evening hours.
"Suspects are out there looking for homes where the people are away, and quickly going to a rear door or window and getting in the house quickly, getting what they can, and leaving," he says.
And McGrath adds that police have some leads and some surveillance images, but they also need help from the public. He believes the burglaries are being committed by more than one person or group of people, and officials are hoping for a break.
The meeting begins at 7:30pm at the township building.
