Delco Serial Robbery Suspect Nabbed

By Pat Loeb and Matt Rivers

UPPER DARBY, Pa. (CBS) -- Police today arrested an Upper Darby man in connection with a string of armed robberies in Delaware County.

Upper Darby police superintendent Michael Chitwood says Charles Kenney, 29, was taken into custody without incident at a Motel 6 in Tinicum Township.

Chitwood says Tinicum police made the arrest within hours of Kenney being identified in the string of robberies (see related story).

"They had an alert that we put out countywide, and they went by and saw the license plate," Chitwood says.

Chitwood had obtained arrest warrants for Kenney in three robberies -- one at a tanning salon, and two separate robberies of a Swiss Farms store (see related stories) -- but Chitwood says  the suspect also been positively identified in three other robberies in Marple and Springfield townships.

Chitwood says a motive for the robberies was simple, "He's a heroin addict. He needs money and the only way he's getting money is to steal. He certainly isn't going to go to work for it."

Police also took a woman traveling with Kenney into custody, though she was not immediately charged with any crime.
