Weekend Box Office Report: Gravity Tops The Competition

By Bill Wine
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --  The law of Gravity was in full swing over the weekend.
Gravity, the science fiction thriller with Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, debuted in first place at the box office, earning an estimated and impressive $55-million and establishing the biggest October opening in movie history.
That dropped last weekend's leader, the animated sequel, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2, to the runner-up spot.
It took in over $21-million on its second weekend.
In third was the new gambling thriller, Runner Runner, with Justin Timberlake and Ben Affleck, with a total of just under $7–million.
Holdovers Prisoner and Rush rounded out the top five with $6-million and $4-million, respectively.
Although industry-wide totals were well below those of a year ago, Gravity's splashy showing made it a respectable fall weekend for the nation's multiplexes.
