Gore-Tex Signs On As Title Sponsor For Philadelphia Marathon

By Steve Tawa

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The upcoming Philadelphia Marathon has a new title sponsor, indicating that Gore-Tex and the marathon are a perfect fit.

Today at City Hall, Kirk Christensen of Gore-Tex Running Footwear handed Mayor Nutter a fancy green pair of his company's running shoes, and told Hizzoner to put them to good use.

But Nutter joked that it would take him days to complete a marathon, with our without special shoes.

"The Gore-Tex feature may or may not kick in," the mayor said.

Christensen says that while WL Gore Inc., based in Newark, Del., is best known for the waterproof, breathable Gore-Tex brand, the company makes more than 1,000 products.

"If you've used a cell phone, flossed your teeth, or driven a car, chances are that you've used a product with Gore inside," he pointed out.

The company is putting up $600,000 over three years as the title sponsor.

More than 30,000 people are expected the weekend of November 15-17th for three races: the marathon, a half-marathon, and an 8K run.
