South Jersey Cop Indicted For Shooting Death Of Friend

By David Madden

DEPTFORD TWP., NJ (CBS) -- A Gloucester County grand jury has handed up a four count indictment against a veteran Deptford police officer in the January shooting death of his friend (see related story).

The attorney for 29-year-old suspended officer James Stuart calls the death of 27-year-old David Compton an accident.

Stuart, a five-year veteran of the force, is charged with murdering Compton, along with counts of aggravated manslaughter and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.

Nowhere is there any mention about what led to the shooting inside Stuart's Deptford home while he was off duty. All prosecutors have said, for public consumption, is that the men had known each other for years, and the shooting was not a random act.
