Phillies' Billboard in South Philadelphia Getting Shorter Stilts

By Mike DeNardo

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A holdover from the Veterans' Stadium era is coming down.  But not all the way down.

The towering triangular sign along Packer Avenue that stayed up after the Vet was imploded 9½ years ago is being lowered by about forty feet.

Fans in the upper deck at Citizens Bank Park have long complained that it ruined a clear view of the center city skyline.  Now, crews are planning to lower the Veterans Stadium "Theme Tower" from 157 to 115 feet.

That's just fine with fans we talked with.

"It's definitely an eyesore," said one.  "It gets in the way of seeing the skyline.  I didn't like it."

"It's a great idea.  I think it's an eyesore," agreed another.  "It's from the old Vet, so they need to get rid of the eyesore."

A two-sided message board will replace the triangular sign.  A Phillies' spokeswoman says the new, lower sign should be up by November 1st.
