Planned Expansion On Soon To Open Medical Marijuana Facility In South Jersey

By David Madden

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Operators of South Jersey's first Medical Marijuana facility have yet to open their doors and they're already planning to expand.

The New Jersey Economic Development Authority has approved a $357,000 loan for the Compassionate Care Foundation. That will allow them to expand their growing facility located in an Egg Harbor Township industrial park.

CEO Bill Thomas hasn't even begun dispensing the drug yet -- that is set to begin in October -- but he's anticipating high demand.

"We'll be able to triple our production because of cycling of the crops," Thomas says, "and serve 1,500 patients a month.

That will come by spring of 2014, once the expansion is complete.

South Jersey's second dispensary, in Bellmawr, is scheduled to open in February.

Montclair opened the first one last year, and three others are in the works statewide.
